I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but with all the craziness going on in the world, sometimes it feels hard to find happiness. It’s like a dark night with no stars. Our worries, concerns, and fears can bog us down and tell us scary stories.
Our imagination likes to convince us that things are truly as bad as we think, and that there is nothing we can do.
This may FEEL true, but it isn’t ACTUALLY true. Now here’s a truth bomb (which may feel like a swift kick in the teeth, but bear with me): the world does not exist to make you happy. Sure, it’s nice when it does happen, but it’s not by any means a guarantee. So don’t wait around for the stars to align and Cthulhu to rise before you allow yourself to be happy. Bring the happiness you want to see to your life.
I know at times it may seem out of reach, but it is sometimes the small moments of happiness that make the biggest difference.
For example, when it comes to board games I like to win. But the truth is that the number of games I actually win is pretty low. So if my happiness is tied solely to my game-winning success, I’d be angry and bitter.
Instead, I base my happiness on playing the best game I can play, and that I get to play at all! This means I can enjoy the whole process even if it doesn’t go my way.
Another more serious example can be found in our current world. Yes, there are scary things to be sure, but I want you to think about something. What if you wake up in the morning and get into action about the things that upset you? You can donate your time, money, & energy. You can work towards a better future. Then at the end of the day, even though there is darkness, you know you did your best to be a light. That is a special kind of happiness and fulfillment. Then, just like with the board game, you can find happiness even when life isn’t going your way. Then you can be the person that finds and brings happiness to your own life.
